I wear and carry crystals every day. I have my regulars and pieces I alternate depending on my needs that day. We also have crystals in our home. When using crystals therapeutically it is important to maintain and care for your crystals. Crystal care isn’t very complicated although it may seem confusing at first. Hopefully this will help clear some things up for you.
Proper use and care of your crystals and crystal jewelry is necessary to get the most benefit and lifespan out of them. After lots of reading, researching, and real-life experience, this is a collection of the information I have found most helpful.
General Crystal Use & Care:
- Elastic can easily get stretched out if you aren’t careful. Make sure when putting on and taking off your bracelets you roll them and don’t pull or stretch them.
- Soaps, lotions, oils, and other substances can dull, deteriorate, and damage crystals. Avoid getting any of those on your jewelry.
- Always remove crystal jewelry before bathing or swimming.
- Crystal beads can crack or shatter, especially more fragile stones. Handle with care and remove them or put them in a pocket or somewhere safe if you will be doing something where they may get damaged. You will still benefit from their therapeutic properties as long as they are close to you.
To physically clean your crystals:
- Most of the time a cool water rinse works well. DO NOT SOAK YOUR CRYSTALS. Soaking crystals can damage or even dissolve some stones. Pat dry with a soft cloth.
- Never use soap. This can also damage your crystals.
- If the cool water rinse doesn’t clean your crystals try using a damp glass cleaning cloth. I like this one. Gently rub the crystal or beads to remove any spots or debris.
Now that you understand how to physically clean your crystals, let’s talk about energy cleansing. When using crystals for therapeutic purposes it is important to cleanse them regularly. You should cleanse them if they are new; if they are being worn or used regularly; if someone else has worn or used them; and when you feel they need to be cleansed. This is a very important part of crystal care.
Crystals have energy. Their own vibration. That’s how they help us. When used regularly that energy or vibration can lessen or get “off.” This is when it becomes important to cleanse them, to reset and renew that energy. For more on the science behind crystal energy, this post is a really interesting read!
‘The sparks, though of one nature with the fire, leap from it, uncounted beings leap from the Everlasting, but these, my son merge into It again. The Everlasting is shapeless, birthless, breathless, mindless, above everything, outside everything, inside everything.’Mundaka Upanishad
There are lots of different ways to cleanse your crystals. These are a few of my favorites:
A full moon is a symbol of new beginnings and possesses a powerful shift of energy. We know this in many ways, but just a few are because of its effect on the ocean, many women go into labor during a full moon phase, and if you’re a parent you know how it can affect behavior and moods. You may even notice it in yourself as well as your children! This energy shift makes it a perfect time to cleanse those crystals.
Simply set your crystals in the moonlight for as long as possible, even if it is cloudy. In a windowsill is fine if you aren’t comfortable leaving them outside. You will get the strongest cleanse on the night of the full moon, but cleansing can also be done up to three days before and three days after the full moon. Make sure to collect them first thing in the morning so they don’t get too much sunlight, as that can fade some stones.
Some crystals can be cleansed with sunlight, especially those that are yellow, orange, or red. For a quick cleanse you can lay them in a sunny spot for no more than 20 minutes max. I try and keep to 10-15 minutes most of the time.
There are a few crystals that will fade with prolonged sun exposure. Some of those are amethyst, aquamarine, citrine, flourite, kunzite, opal, colored quartz, super seven, and turquoise among others. Especially transparent stones.
This is a super quick method that allows you to cleanse many crystals at one time. As I mentioned earlier, a crystal’s energy is a vibration, and since sound is also a vibration this method works very well.
I prefer using a singing bowl. These can be found pretty easily in many different sizes and to fit many budgets. A small one, around 3.5″, is a perfect size for cleansing crystals. I like this one from Amazon. Singing bowls transform unbalanced or negative energy into balanced or positive energy. They raise the vibration of everything around them.
It can take some practice getting the hang of the singing bowl, so have fun getting used to it when you get a new one. It should make a nice, clear sound like a bell that continues when rubbed with the wooden stick.
On a flat surface, place your crystals around your singing bowl. Do not put anything inside of it. Gently strike the side of the bowl with the stick. Gently, but firmly, rub the outside of the bowl in a clockwise direction with the stick to keep the sound going. Continue for a few rounds with intention. Stop when it feels right.
Using a sage stick, light the end and blow out the flame. Then simply run your crystals through the smoke of the sage stick. Remember to open a window for ventilation.
You can also use sustainably grown and ethically sourced Palo Santo or incense of sandalwood, camphor, copal, lemongrass, sage, frankincense, or myrrh.
Always make sure to set your intentions before using and after you have cleansed your crystals.

When you get new, or new to you, crystals you will likely feel energy and experience benefits from them immediately. While not absolutely necessary, setting the intention for your crystals can be a powerful tool for directing their energy, just like setting the intention for your day or anything else.
Setting intentions for crystals can be as simple as saying a prayer or speaking over them or as in-depth as meditating with them, focusing on whatever it is you are hoping they will help you with. The most important thing is doing what feels right to you. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. But if your crystal or piece of jewelry isn’t working quite as you hoped, it may be worth giving it a try.
Here is a simple run down for intention setting. Feel free to use whatever words feel right to you:
- Find a quiet space where you will have a few moments to yourself. (This may be the most challenging part, especially if you are a parent!)
- Holding your crystal or piece of jewelry in your hands, relax and take some deep, cleansing breaths.
- Focus on your crystals and your intention.
- Either out loud or in your head, say something like: “Please assist me with…,” “I program these crystals for…,” or “Lord, thank you for these crystals. Please allow them to help me with…” or whatever feels right to you.
While this seems like a lot of info, once you find the system and routine that works well for you it is super simple to maintain! The benefits of using crystals therapeutically are never-ending. And when you practice good crystal care they will serve you well for many years!
