Why Mindfully Modern Mama?
I had a list of possible names when I decided to start this venture. Several were marked off because the name was already being used on social media or the domain name was already taken, there’s a lot of smart mamas out there! A couple I was worried would cause my site to not be seen with the current state of information censoring. In the end, Mindfully Modern Mama was the name that won out! But why Mindfully Modern Mama?
There are many words that describe our way of life. When I asked some like-minded friends what they thought, these are some of the responses I got: naturally-minded, crunchy, holistic, aware, granola, conscious, and one of my personal favorites… woke. My husband likes to call me his modern-day hippie. I’ve also been lovingly called a witch haha.
I like the word mindful. The Oxford definition is to be conscious or aware of something. I think that’s extremely accurate. When it comes to this lifestyle you’re almost overly conscious and aware of everything! Whether it be what goes in and on your body; what’s being used in your home or the surrounding environment; the products you use and how you dispose of them; and of course the ingredients in, well, everything. You’ve probably read more and learned to research better than you ever imagined possible!
Here is where the modern comes in. I understand, respect, and enjoy technology. This is where I sometimes differ slightly from some of my super crunchy friends who prefer a more off-grid lifestyle with no tablets, no computers, and little if any television. That way of life is absolutely wonderful if it works for your family! It’s just not us.
I understand how important technology will be in our future and the importance of my children learning about it, the benefits and dangers, alongside learning kindness, compassion, mindfulness, and you know, reading and math and stuff. Luckily as homeschoolers, I get to decide what, when, and how they learn.
I love that information is constantly available at our fingertips. Something we don’t know or want to look up? The answers are quite literally in our pockets. I’m thankful for the friendships and connections I make and maintain because of it. And honestly, I’d forget everything if I couldn’t set reminders! I’m proud to say I have designed and maintain my blogs all on my own and designed my own logo here! My husband is a graphic designer who has tried to teach me a few things.
My husband and I are both proud geeks, it’s what my other blog GeekMama revolves around. We love going to the movies and can often be found cuddled up on the couch working on our laptops while watching a movie or a favorite TV show.
I believe in balance. With everything.
I also understand, like so many things, there are dangers to be aware of. I’m totally against 5G, my children don’t access tech unsupervised, and I realize smartphones have become an addiction. These are all things on my list to be mindful of. It’s quite a long list. I know it’s because of technology that we can research so well, but we also have to know what to look for and understand how that information is now being censored and filtered. Not everyone, even professionals in their field, will do their own research and many won’t agree with our lifestyle choices. We have to be our own advocate at all times and we have to make sure we have the accurate information and knowledge to back up those choices.
I think very few of us are lucky enough to be born into a naturally-minded way of life. Many of us find ourselves on this journey after something happens that forces us into awareness. Then slowly, in one area at a time, we become more and more conscious of truths, and lies, and of our choices and how they affect us and everything around us.
I’m eternally grateful that my children will grow up knowing this way of life. That this will be their normal and how much healthier and happier they will be because of it. And hopefully how much kinder and compassionate.

If you’re already here, then you understand and hopefully, we can learn from each other. If you’re just starting your journey and feeling lost and confused, hold on and don’t stop researching! I promise it gets easier and so much better. Hopefully you’ll find lots of information here to help you along the way. And if you are just curious about this lifestyle, then stick around and follow along! I hope through my stories and experiences that I can help you find your way as well.
Let me know in the comments where you are on your journey and if there is anything you would love to know more about!
